Love them or loathe them, some YouTubers have an unbelievable number of followers. Here’s a few you can put in the ‘love them’ category for using their platform for the greater good of our planet.
MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson), was challenged by his followers to plant 20 million trees to celebrate his channel reaching 20 million subscribers in May.
Not one to shy away from a challenge, Mr Beast approached fellow YouTubers, Mark Rober, Rhett & Link, Marshmello, AsapScience, Jeffree Star, Simone Giertz and The Try Guys to join him and drive the cause.
The team leading the #TeamTrees project have a combined following of 650 million subscribers with incredible potential to create climate awareness and have positive impact on our planet.
MrBeast launched the campaign in video above where he claimed the team would plant 20 million trees, with the help of volunteers, they only managed to plant 1,700 over two days. A great effort but a long way off target.
Maybe the aching muscles triggered the lightbulb moment when Donaldson called on his base to donate 1$ to the Arbor Day Foundation, the largest non-profit tree planting organisation in the world. The foundation will plant one tree for every dollar donated, so launching a campaign to raise $20,000,000 (£15,592,110) in order to plant 20 million trees.
Concluding the video, MrBeast said: “A lot of you might be of the mindset of the old me that was basically, ‘someone else will figure it out’. But that’s not how it works, we genuinely need all the help we can get.
“Honestly I’ve done everything I can: I’ve got a bunch of fans together and we’ve planted thousands of trees. Me and Mark [Rober] have invested months of time behind the scenes getting this together and I’m personally planting 100,000 trees – aka a $100,000 donation.
“I’ve literally tried my best to do everything I can and now it’s your turn.”
He continued: “We only have one Earth and it’s important we take care of it. Recently lots of not so great things have been happening to forests and people just keep making fun of our generation for retweet activism and not actually doing something, which is why we created TeamTrees.org with the help of the Arbor Day Foundation.”
The campaign has so far raised over $5,5m – that’s 5.5 million trees! Join the cause and donate here.
