A 75 year old woman in India gave birth to her first biological baby child.

Due to her age and health complications, the baby was born prematurely at 30 weeks, weighing only one pound and eight ounces

Prabha Devi arrived at Kinker Hospital in Rajasthan on Saturday night for observation. The baby girl was initially put onto a ventilator machine after she was born, but has since been removed and is in a stable condition.

The couple had been trying to conceive naturally for years and had adopted a child, but were still desperate to have for one of their own and eventually sought help from medical science.

Dr Abhilasha Kinker, the gynecologist and obstetrician who delivered the child, said: “Prabha Devi had come to our hospital 4-5 days before the delivery.

“We conducted Doppler sonography and found there were complications in her pregnancy so we decided to deliver the child through cesarean section.

“She was ill and old and we couldn’t take chances with her and the child’s life. She had already carried the child for over six months which was very surprising for her age.

“If we had not delivered the baby, she might have died in the womb.”

The doctors at the hospital were unsure of the mother’s exact age since she did not provide relevant documentation, they did however realise that the delivery would be difficult because she ‘was very old’.

Dr Kinker continued: “She told us her age but showed no proof. She looked between 72-75. Her husband told us he is 80… It was surprising for me.

“Her age was a factor and then she was ill. She has one collapsed lung so it was a very challenging operation.”

Although Devi has been discharged from the hospital, the baby remains in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit where her condition is monitored.

Kinker explained: “She is at neonatal intensive care unit. We are monitoring her. The mother cannot feed her unless she gains weight.

“She needs to be at least 3.3lbs to be allowed home from hospital. She is stable and recovering fast.”
