The typical person knows of several to a dozen sea creatures including, but not limited to, starfish, dolphins, sea horses, whales, and sharks. However, as scientists continue to discover new species, an estimate of only 8-15% of marine life has been documented to date. Experienced diver and photographer, Alexander Semenov took the opportunity during Italy’s country-wide lockdown to explore the depths of the dark seas. His curiosity took him to brave and unforgiving territories. The results added up to a wondrous portrayal of some of the ocean’s most curious beings.

His work focuses on invertebrates which can lead him to some of the most deserted places underwater. With over 13 years of experience, Semenov has sharpened his ability to capture life through extreme currents, cold temperatures, murky waters, and low visibility.

“The ocean is a parallel universe, another world inhabited by amazing creatures. Many of these creatures are so gentle and ephemeral that even a single touch can be the last event in their lives. It’s extremely difficult and sometimes just impossible to study in the lab,” Semenov shares.

These photos are fascinating to the eyes and spirit for reasons beyond their obscurity. Semenov’s work is a reminder to the curious soul that passion and determination can lead to new worlds and discoveries. The planet may be under various lockdowns, but the heart continues to lead in finding beauty hidden within a parallel universe.
