Having just celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, amidst a global lockdown, humanity is positioned to appreciate the planet from another perspective. Non-essential shops remain open while man-made creations to enjoy leisure time have ceased to operate. All we have right now is this big and beautiful rock we call home. NASA’s Terra Satellite offers yet another layer of perspective to appreciate and acknowledge the changes our planet experiences.

The featured images were taken with the ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) instrument. ASTER collects data in multiple wavelengths documenting Earth’s surface through a variety of factors including water temperature, heat activity, and change in minerals.

The images shown below appear otherworldly when compared to the “blue marble” often depicted in popular space photos.
