Big rescue efforts took place the other day…to save a fat rat from a man-hole! And people are going wild for the story.
This amusing little tale begins with a little girl in the town of Bensheim. She was walking down the street when she saw the chubby female rat struggling to escape from one of the smaller openings in the manhole cover. The poor little thing was so plump from her excessive amount of “winter flab” that she wasn’t able to bring her hips through the grate.
The little girl called out for help and a hero came to the rescue. While local animal rescuer Michael Sehr was trying his best to free the rodent, with no avail, the little girls parents called the local firefighters to come to the scene. Now, even with the extra help this was no easy task!
The firefighters came in with tools and many men. They pried open the manhole cover and kept it supported while Sehr gently worked the rotund rat loose from the other side. Finally, after a surprising amount of difficulty and dedication to the mission, the crew was able to safely extract the rat and set her free, back into the sewer.
To spread the news of their achievement, and congratulate the men for their successful mission accomplishment, the animal organization that Sehr works for (Berufstierrettung Rhein Neckar) posted some photos and video of the rescue operation to social media.
As a result, the group of German animal rescuers (hero’s) that saved the animal are being praised by thousands for their compassion towards a humble sewer rat. And of course, some people are loving the pictures simply out of amusement, finding the concept of a chubby critter putting itself in such a predicament funny.
When Sehr was asked by local news reporters why so many people had worked so hard to save a rat, he simply told them that “even animals that are hated by many deserve respect.”
To top it all off, as if the pictures of the rat weren’t cute enough, the rescue organization also included a photo of Sehr being given a drawing of the rat from the little girl who found it. Even though Sehr’s heroic services are always free of charge, he said that the heart-filled picture was payment enough.
