The Perseid meteor shower graces our summer skies every year from July 14 to Aug 24. Considered to be the best celestial shower by Nasa experts, they are set to peak this week on the evening of Aug 11 and 12. Skygazers can expect to see around 100 meteorites per hour during the peak.

These meteorites are immensely bright. Luckily, for those planning to watch, no external equipment will be needed. In fact, turning to telescopes or binoculars might limit your view.

The moon will be over the horizon, according to NASA, which can make for less than optimal viewing circumstances. However, with a clear sky, stargazers will definitely catch the Perseids in all its glory.

To see this meteor shower’s peak, looking northeast on the nights of August 11 and 12. The best time to look for meteorites is in the early hours of the morning (2 AM to dawn). Look toward the Allow your eyes to adjust to the night sky keeping cell phones and other electronics away.

While the Perseids light up the night sky with blazing balls of fire, these meteorites are made of small pieces of ice and dust from the tail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. They get their name from the constellation Perseus which is where they shoot from when looking from an Earthbound perspective.

If the weather proves to be too cloudy, be sure to catch the Perseids all throughout the end of August.
