A film was recently searching for a quiet train station to film, but what he came across was something very special… this is his story:

I was searching for a train station, the kind you rarely see, small, by the countryside. then I found it. and by accident, found something else, someone else. Miyako. the station master. I watched her smile at each exiting passenger. Then, noticed her wave at the departing one-car train. then, surprisingly, she continued waving, she waved until there was no trace left of the distant train. no one witnessed her, except, well, me. In that short span, my love and wonder of life was renewed, when i spoke to her later, she said at first she felt so shy, and hardly waved at all, then slowly, over time, she began doing something she neither needed to do, nor imagined she ever would. so, this is Miyako, master of a tiny station in the middle of nowhere japan who attends to every train and passenger that passes by.

After researching a bit more about this station and it’s master I found that to my suprise the station master, the train drivers and all staff working on this line are all volunteers. They work for no pay. They are a group of dedicated citizens doing their part to revive the line which was abandoned for several years. They got the towns on the line to donate and got to change all the sleepers of the line. Now the income from the line is used to repair the stations and their facilities.

Miyako clearly loves and enjoys her work….every time the trains arrives is a joy for her…when the train departs a part of her goes with the train! A beautiful example of devoted humanness!

This video for me is reminder of how there is something very special about the people and culture of Japan. It’s a reminder of how paying attention to the simple finer things in life can sometimes be the most poignant and character building things we can do.
