Scientists from the ScanPyramids project—a mission set into motion to explore the Pyramids in 2015—have made a historical discovery inside the Great Pyramid of Giza.
With the use of non-invasive technologies, they have found a MASSIVE void hiding inside the Pyramid. The void looks like a corridor; it has remained hidden behind the chevrons of the North face of the pyramid for centuries. The Big Void’s minimum length is 30 meters and is located between 50 to 70 meters from the ground. It could be composed of one or more internal structures. It is either horizontal or inclined, and its cross-section is similar to that of the Grand Gallery.
The historical discovery is the first of this type in this construction since the nineteenth century. It could change everything we know about the Pyramid.
For 4,500 years, the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, hid inside its massive blocks of stone a huge cavity, according to a study published in the journal Nature.
The cavity is “as big” as “a 200-seater airplane in the heart of the pyramid,” Mehdi Tayubi, co-director of the ScanPyramids project, responsible for the discovery, told AFP.
A team of Egyptian, French, Canadian and Japanese researchers has been exploring through non-invasive techniques the interior of the pyramid since late 2015 using cutting-edge – technology, which allows scientists to see through the monument in order to discover possible cavities or unknown internal structures.
“There are numerous theories about the existence of possible secret chambers in the pyramid, if we put them all together, we would get a gruyere cheese!” Joked Mehdi Tayubi.
“But none of them predicted the existence of something so big,” he added.
According to the study published in Nature, the big void, as scientists call the finding, is at least 30 meters long and has characteristics similar to those of the Grand Gallery the largest known inner structure inside the pyramid.
The mysterious new discovery was found about 40 or 50 meters from the queen’s chamber, in the very center of the monument.
“The Big Void is totally closed, nothing has been touched since the construction of the pyramid, it is a very exciting discovery,” said Kunihiro Morishima, of Nagoya University in Japan, one of the scientists taking part in the ScanPyramids mission.
The finding was possible thanks to a state-of-the-art scanning process called ‘muography’ which has the ability to pick up tiny cosmic particles known as muons.
As explained by experts, Muons tend to lose some of their energy and ultimately decay when they move through matter, so if large quantities are picked by a detector, it means a cavity must exist, which has allowed them to pass through unimpeded, and most importantly without damaging the structure.
“What we are sure if it is there, and it is impressive, It is the same height as the Statue of the Liberty.
“It could be a second grand gallery, and it could be a chamber. We are working with archaeologists to compare it to other chambers; the void is there, it’s very big. It was not expected by any kind of theory. We are thinking about sending in a very innovative robot that can get through a small hole,” said researchers.
