It’s a bit of an art to find the perfect route when running. There are so many factors like scenery, terrain and of course, safety as a priority with as little traffic which could affect your flow.

A runner in San Francisco took the first part above seriously and has spent a couple of years turning his running routes into actual artworks.

Lenny Maughan decided that it would be fun to make rather creative illustrations on a city map and has so far made 53 masterpieces with his routes, from a star ship enterprise  to Frida Kahlo, his work has spiraled on Reddit.

This all started with runners noticing the pictures in their running apps where tracking was involved and the art of well, making art became a thing.

Lenny explained to the Guardian:

That’s where it all began. But I wanted to do something different and something original.

His first piece was the Vulcan hand gesture from Star Trek, which was prompted by Leonard Nimoy’s death in 2015.

He continued:

I just printed out a paper map and sketched a hand shape along Market Street and the other fingers, thumb and wrist came pretty easily.

He furthermore went on to make a TV set, a giant Bat-Signal based on Batman and according to Lenny, ‘the larger you go, the more fine-tuned you can make the shape.’

It took Lenny 28.9 miles to complete Frida Kahlo while using Strava – a running app.

This all starts with a pen and paper, planning his routes carefully. A gift that comes naturally to artistic Lenny.

He said:

When I was a kid everyone thought I’d be an artist when I grew up – I was always drawing things.

The artist/runner has resided in San Francisco for over 20 years and quite a lot of his pieces stem from his passion for the city, with many tributes such as a firefighter’s helmet and axe in honor of the first respondents amid some serious wildfires to an outline of California.
