With just 50 possessions to his name, Rob Greenfield is taking extreme measures to foster the change he wishes to see in the world. He is an activist and humanitarian dedicated to humanity’s transition toward a more mindful, sustainable, and just world. In this episode of Educate Inspire Change, Kash connects with Rob on what it means to live an examined life, creating solutions to modern problems, and sustaining a wealthy mental state of awareness.

An Examined Life

“Living an examined life, what that means, is understanding all of my actions and how they affect the earth, other people, other species, and the ecosystems we depend on,” Rob explains.

This philosophy plays a critical role in our aim to do change. The more we examine where things come from and how they came to be, the more we can honestly look at our behaviors and take steps toward a harmonious life.

From Rob’s experience, his life’s examination propelled him to shed ties from ideas like consumerism and materialism that are often sold as the dream. At this point, many are realizing community living is the future of a self-sufficient and eco-friendly world.

When we return to the basics, we step into the grand remembering of the abundance around us. These steps in green living and sustainability are how we work with and respect the tools of nature.

Money Creates the Illusion of Freedom

“I think the truth is that money creates the illusion of independence. Being able to buy whatever goods and services we need, we’re able to forget that behind what we spend there are people and other species, there are ecosystems,” Rob Greenfield admits.

In this illusory veil, there are invisible chains that often hold people to their situations. Whether it be a mortgage or hefty student loan bill, money can either be a means of enslavement or a tool of unity and good.

To add to Rob’s perspective, when we examine our lives from an honest point of view, we can see and admit what truly sets us free.

Problems vs. Solutions

Kash touches on the idea where there is a lot of talk around our society’s problems yet not enough conversation on the solutions. He asks Rob to share some practical solutions with listeners, “For your average person, what can they start doing in their life today, or now while they’re listening to this to start to be the change they wish to see in the world?”

The first, and most important, solution Rob begins with is food. “Food is one of our biggest gateways to connecting with Earth, it’s one of the most important things for personal health, and it is a great way for getting involved with our local communities.” Rob also mentions food as a great place to start because when we are more connected with our food, it often ripples out into all aspects of life.

Rob’s additional advice is to grow your own food, support local farmers, and eat less processed foods.

An Honest Approach Toward Mental Health

As we continue to examine our lives, the promise of a healthier future awaits. Rob discusses pointers on ensuring high states of mental well-being from drinking less alcohol to moving your body. However, Rob also touches on an essential factor that is often left out of the mental health discussion, which is to live a life of truth.

It goes beyond honesty to those one interacts with. It also goes beyond refraining from telling a white lie. A life of truth touches on our very being and way of experiencing.

“If you’re living a lie, every day you’re sort of contradicting yourself and trying to say things one way when it’s not the reality… ” Rob continues, “It creates an incredible amount of friction in your mind.”

Stress in the mind creates stress in the body. Pay attention to the fatigue, Rob advises. This is where listening and returning to examination does wonders.
