Known for being home to people with open minds, considered a bohemian city filled with artists and musicians, San Francisco is changing.

Silicon Valley has upped living prices substantially, and thanks to all the tech entrepreneurs San Fran;s iconic art galleries close their doors one by one, because nobody can afford the rent anymore.

To top it off, the city is also the birth place of one of the most appalling GoFundMe campaigns we’ve come across.

The people of Embarcadero, which is one of the wealthiest and most affluent neighborhoods in San Francisco have raised over $70,000 to stop a homeless shelter from opening in its district. They have a goal of $100,000 and it will be used to pay an attorney who will work to oppose the shelter on behalf of the residents

The Campaign, ‘Safe Embarcadero for All‘ is asking businesses, residents and anyone else who is interested in opposing the Navigation Center proposed for Seawall Lot 330 to donate to it’s cause, with one individual donating a whopping $10,000.

The San Francisco Chronicle published the following statement from  Mayor London Breed:

“People want us to address the challenges on our streets and help our unsheltered residents into housing, and I am committed to doing the hard work to make that happen,

But it’s incredibly frustrating and disappointing that as soon as we put forward a solution to build a new shelter, people begin to threaten legal action,

I get that people have questions about the site, and we are happy to demonstrate how these sites work and the positive impacts they have had in other neighborhoods, but we all need to be willing to be part of the solution.”

San Fransisco promised to provide 1000 extra beds for it’s homeless residents, The Waterfront Embarcadero Navigation center would have provided 200 of those beds once built on a 2.3 acre vacant lot

The Guardian reports that there are over 7000 residents in San Fran who are currently homeless, 1400 of which are waiting

Despite  Embarcadero’s disgusting campaign, San Francisco’s inspiring activist heritage still remains, a rival GoFundMe campaign was set up to do the exact opposite, support the Navigation Center.

According to this campaign:

The funds will be used exclusively to support the amazing work the Coalition on Homelessness does to support our unhoused neighbors.

It’s reached a staggering $92,000 at the time of writing! If you’d like to donate please do so HERE.
