The Oregon Psilocybin Therapy Initiative has gained 167,782 signatures in support of legalizing its use in therapeutic settings. If the signatures are verified, the ballot is said to appear in November.

This move is a big step for the country as individual states have the potential to set an example for those to follow. With the intention of assisting those battling anxiety or depression, legalizing psilocybin offers a new approach toward healing the mind and spirit. Its psychoactive effects allow users to explore their inner landscape in ways they may never have approached.

Oregon’s steps in legalizing psilocybin, also known as “magic mushrooms,” doesn’t necessarily make it openly accessible as cannabis.

According to the campaign’s press release, it will “empower the Oregon Health Authority to set up all licensing, training, certification, and ongoing education requirements for psilocybin service centers and facilitators during a mandated two-year development process.” It will be interesting to follow this process as it unfolds. If you’re familiar with psychedelic use, you’ll know the setting is everything.

An example that comes to mind is the LSD test and administration during the 1950s in association with the CIA and MK-Ultra. The lessons learned from the past’s experience is enough to treat a pioneering time in psychedelic healing with compassion and sensitivity.

Heal in nature, with nature.

As officials explore the administration of “magic mushrooms,” use will be structured with patient screening and evaluation. While these are only the beginning stages, a veer toward plant-based medicinal healing is the direction we must go as a collective.

“We need better mental health treatment options now more than ever,” Dr. Rachel Knox, who joined in a Zoom conference advocating for psilocybin, said, “and this initiative has the right supervision and safeguards in place.”
