We have 5 months left of the year and somehow, in true human fashion, we have used up our allowable, sustainable resources for the year.

Known as Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) is coming sooner each year, marking this year as the most alarming so far. With records stemming back from 1986.

This horrifying figure indicates that this happened 2 months sooner than 20 years ago and it seems to just be getting worse.

EOD is calculated based on stats provided by the Global Footprint Network. Their findings indicate that humans are using 1.75 times the ecological resources that the planet can reasonably handle due to overpopulation and increased consumption. Rather alarming facts.

Deforestation, soil erosion and the loss of biodiversity are evident results of the crisis and the build-up of carbon dioxide is a clear indicator of climate change and extreme weather changes – think floods, torrential wind and earthquakes. Prime examples.

In a statement made in a press release, founder of Global Footprint Network, Mathis Wackernagel, said:

We have only got one Earth – this is the ultimately defining context for human existence. We can’t use 1.75 without destructive consequences.

If we somehow could shift EOD back by 5 days a year, the year 2050 should see sustainability.

There are 5 key areas which we need to address according to the Global Footprint Network:

  • Cities
  • Energy
  • Food
  • Population
  • Planet

Reducing the carbon emissions which are caused by fossil fuels by 50% alone would see EOD roll back by 93 full days!

Chilean Minister of Environment, María Carolina Schmidt Zaldívar, said:

With Earth Overshoot Day occurring ever earlier in the year, and a big part of it being the growing amounts of CO2 emissions, the importance of decisive action is becoming ever more evident. For this reason, we are working with all parties to find effective approaches.

Former Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Christiana Figueres, Solar Impulse Foundation founder Bertrand Piccard, and Club of Rome co-president Sandrine Dixson-Declѐve, are climate conscious individuals who are part of a collective which have tweeted statements on video which are calling for everyone to actively help in moving the date, labeling the movement as #MoveTheDate.

The announcement of EOD is a terrifying warning and should not be ignored. Will this be enough though to encourage people to curb their consumption habits?
