A Billionaire Is Planning To Drag An Antarctic Iceberg 5,000 Miles To The UAE

2 years ago saw a outragous plan when the UAE have decided on a new strategy to bring fresh drinking water to their residents.

With many suggesting some sort of desalination plant, someone thought “out of the box”.

Rather wealthy Emiratis decided that dragging an iceberg 1,000km’s up the coast from Antarctica would be a better idea.

I know what you’re thinking – this sounds silly right? but that’s not stopping them.

later this year, they will run a test which will involve a giant chunk of Antarctic ice being dragged to the west coast of Australia or eastern coast of South Africa.

The best part is the test will casually cost them a mere $80 million. Yes you read that right.

The iceberg is situated on Heard Island which is Australian territory, so the chances of it ending up in Perth’s waters is very high.

UAE investor and entrepreneur Abdulla Alshehi has told Euronews:

“As per our analysis, it will be cheaper to bring in these icebergs rather than using desalination water (gained by stripping the salt out of sea water.)

“Desalination plants require a huge amount of capital investment and mean pumping a huge amount of sea water to the gulf, killing fish and marine life.

“We believe it will be economically better and more environmentally friendly to use the icebergs, not just for the United Arab Emirates, but throughout the world.”

The Daily Mail suggested that an iceberg of 2km long and 500m wide would provide enough drinking water to a million people for 5 years. That’s pretty impressive.

The UAE also hopes that the presence of the iceberg will alter their climate in the process as well, drawing rain clouds to the area. And being one of the most arid places in the world, they consume more than double the amount of water than the rest of the globe.

Averaging less than 4 inches of rain a year does not help this cause either.

I am very interested to see how this project pans out.
