Matt Maruca Breaks Down the ‘Light Diet’ for Optimal Health and Circadian Rhythm Function

In this episode, co-hosts Kash and Josh share the benefits of following a “light diet” with Matt Maruca, CEO and founder of Ra Optics.  It’s no debate that the sun produces life supporting energy for all creatures on Earth. However, there are many misconceptions when it comes to the effects light has on our body. Matt breaks down the relationship light has with our circadian rhythm and clears up misunderstandings around the role genes play in our lives. To combat experiences like stress and acne, Matt’s story is one devoted to improving health and well-being using various modalities. Through decision-based action, he improved his health while learning more about what makes the cellular body tick. He continued to hone his knowledge in biohacking to help others optimize their health. 

Most of this work boils down to the effects light poses on the body. Ra Optics is a leading company in providing health-enhancing glasses. “The glasses are called blue blockers, blue light glasses, to reduce the blue wavelengths that can disrupt a lot of the biological systems like our bodies clock and energy production systems,” Matt describes.


Following the Beat of the Circadian Rhythm:


The general understanding of the circadian rhythm is widely overlooked. Not only does this internal clock system govern our sleep/wake cycle, but it also serves as the focal point of ensuring our organs act and adapt accordingly. 

“Every single gene in the body is linked with a clock gene. So, our circadian rhythm doesn’t just control things like our sleep/wake cycle, our hormone production, our metabolic activity…. It also controls the expression of our genes,” Matt shares. 

He continues to describe the circadian rhythm as a parallel example to that of an orchestra. For example, if all the musicians are off beat by just a fraction of a hair, or if the conductor is not present, the entire performance will lack proper timing and sound completely off. 

The beat of our circadian rhythm keeps all of our bodily functions ready to adapt to the changes in our environment. It keeps us in a balanced dance between light and dark. When our moves are in synch with these fluctuations, the potential for maximum well-being can be further explored from a genetic level. 


The Light Diet 101:

•Take in the morning sun. The rays emitted from the early sun provide natural frequencies that are good for the body. Similar to the ancient practice of sun-gazing, taking in at least 5-15 minutes of sun to offer the circadian rhythm with natural benefits.

•Refrain from eating late. This causes the body to be heavy and in action when it is meant to rest. In a nutshell, late night eating is not recommended when following the beat of the circadian rhythm.

•This also ties in with ancient Ayurvedic wisdom. Learn your dosha to best cater to your needs. 



Is It Really Written in Your Genes?


Throughout history’s narrative we were told genes hold the codes to everything from our hair color to our likelihood in developing health problems. 

“The issue with the genetic paradigm is that if you’re studying the nuclear genes for disease, you’re basically saying if someone has a disease it’s a problem in their genes… that they inherited… and the only way you can solve is by taking a drug,” Matt reminds.

He brings change in behavior back as a powerful alternative to drugs while shedding insights on how genes truly operate. Matt begins by explaining the difference between nuclear genes and mitochondrial genes. 

For example, nuclear genes are inherited from both parents while mitochondrial genes are solely from the mother. Matt mentions while nuclear genes serve as the blueprint of a power plant, the mitochondrial genes are like the intricate wiring. 

Matt goes further into the relationship between epigenetics and mitochondria as well as how blue-blocking glasses can help people who suffer from migraines.
