This might be too early to plan for your 2019 but as the adage says, the early bird catches worms. If you want to have 2019 as your most productive year, then try considering a few tweaks and tricks for your daily morning habit.
Millionaires didn’t acquire their big heap of money by doing the things ordinary people do. First, they employ discipline into their lifestyle and stick on with it. This discipline starts first thing in the morning, right after they wake up.
If you’re keen on making your 2019 your most successful year ever, maybe not so much in earning your first million in 2019 (if you haven’t any yet), but in improving your life in leaps and bounds. The best way to do this is to follow the morning habits of these successful people.
Once you pick up the right habits that you think will work for you best, it’s better to start doing the practice this December so that when 2019 comes, you’re all set. Remember, it takes a while to form a habit and rewire your brain. Repetition is key. Here are the six habits to choose from:
1. Rise early.
“The time just before dawn contains the most energy of all hours of the day. This has helped me become an early riser and an early doer.” – Terri Guillemets
While there are people who identify themselves as night owls or early birds, a research by the American Psychological Association found that those who wake up early feel happier and healthier compared to those who wake up late.
Richard Branson, a self-made billionaire and founder of the Virgin Group wakes up at 5:45 a.m. to exercise and spend time with his family. According to Branson, this puts him in a great mind frame before getting down to business.
“The more regularly and the more deeply you meditate, the sooner you will find yourself acting from a center of inner peace.” – J. Donald Walters
Buddhists monk can meditate between 6 and 8 hours a day. Since you don’t have any plans of becoming a Buddhist monk, meditating for 10 to 15 minutes after waking up is enough to start your day with a clear mind.
Meditation provides you with a stillness of heart that sets the tone for your entire day. When you start your day in a calm and relaxed state, you will be less bothered by the little stresses of life and better able to cope with them should they arise.
Journalist and entrepreneur Arianna Huffington starts her day with a 30-minute meditation.
3. Eat the frog first.
“Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” – Mark Twain
You must have been familiar with this morning habit. Self-development author and speaker Brian Tracy talked about this habit in his book “Eat that frog!” He said, “Your frog is your biggest, most important task, the one you’re most likely to procrastinate on if you don’t do something about it.”
When you tackle your most difficult task first, your day will flow more smoothly because you have nothing to worry about.
Shark Tank investor and self-made billionaire, Mark Cuban, admitted this is what he does first thing in the morning. While still lying on the bed, he grabs his phone and starts going through his emails. He said, “… whatever the stressful things are, I try to get those out of the way in the morning.
If you practice this habit, you will not only eliminate the most difficult task but will boost your sense of accomplishment earlier on your day.
4. Take cold showers.
“Standing under freezing cold showers every morning, I did that. I got up to seven minutes most mornings, and it actually works; it immunizes your body, and your body starts getting used to the cold. It really works.” – Liam Nesson
Cold showers used to be a therapy in the 1820s because of its many benefits that include building strong willpower, improving emotional resilience, reducing stress, and increasing alertness.
Athletes and basketball players like LeBron James take cold showers because of its ability to speed up muscle recovery. Others say they take cold showers first thing in the morning to wake them up.
This might seem difficult at first but the secret to being able to do it is by taking deep breaths until your body adjusts to the cold.
Life coach Tony Robbins plunges into a 57-degree Fahrenheit pool of water for its activation of the body’s natural healing abilities.
You don’t have to have a swimming pool to enjoy a cold water. Taking cold showers will definitely do it.
“Exercise is telling your body, ‘you’re gonna hate me for this, but you’ll thank me later.’” – Unknown
Aside from keeping your blood in full circulation, exercise gives you tons of benefits. Studies show that a morning exercise increases concentration and motivation at work, reduces workplace burnout, and increases well-being.
If hitting the gym isn’t your thing, walking is the best alternative. It can engage both your upper and lower body. Also, don’t forget to hydrate yourself after you exercise.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey take a 7-minute workout 3 times. He said building a consistent routine the same thing every day allows him a steady state to be more effective in reacting to something that is out of band.
7. Write a gratitude journal.
“Learn to be thankful for what you already have, while you pursue all that you have.” – Jim Rohn
Being grateful for everything that you have is the best way to connect with the universe. It’s easier for the universe to provide you with what you need when your heart is open and grateful.
There are times when you can’t think of the things that you’re grateful for. Writing a gratitude journal makes you more aware of the things that you should be thankful about.
A study shows that keeping a regular gratitude journal can increase your well-being and positive emotions significantly. Also, when you start your day off with a positive mindset, it would be much easier for you to tackle some challenges that may arise in your day.
Billionaire and media mogul Oprah Winfrey advocates for keeping a journal to track your gratitude. Oprah writes “… I’m back to journaling —electronically—and whenever there’s a grateful moment, I note it. I know for sure that appreciating whatever shows up for you in life changes your personal vibration. You radiate and generate more goodness for yourself when you’re aware of all you have and not focusing on your have-nots.”
All of these morning habits are proven effective. Give yourself a challenge and try them out for 30 days. This way, you have enough time to figure out what works for you and what doesn’t. And when 2019 starts, you already know how to make your new year successful starting on day one.
Here’s to your success!
