Stephen Wamukota is the youngest person to win the presidential order of service award in Kenya for a life-saving invention.

With the help of his father, Stephen built a semi-automatic wooden hand washing machine to mitigate the spread of the recent viral outbreak. He used locally available materials for the washer and soap dispenser.

“I had bought some pieces of wood to make a window frame, but when I came back home after work one day I found that Stephen had made the machine,” his father, Mr. Wamukota told the BBC.

His efforts have already left a lasting impact on the Kenyan community where up to 2,000 viral cases have been reported.

Stephen has dreams of becoming an engineer. This recent construction has paved a promising path of opportunities for the young boy. Impressed by Stephen’s initiative, the governer, Wycliffe Wangamati has promised him an educational scholarship.

“We are waiting for school to open to contact him about his promise. He (the governor) told me that once school opens, he will give him a scholarship to a school that can match his talents,” Stephen’s father said.

“He is always saying he wants to build factories and become an engineer,” he said. “I hope he does, that he becomes a great person.”
