Ikea has come up with a flatpack garden so city dwellers with little space can enjoy a green patch all of their own.

The Swedish furniture giant has launched the Growroom – a DIY 9ft tall sphere for nurturing plants, veg and herbs that you can sit in with your family and friends.

It consists of just 17 sheets of plywood and a mind-boggling 500 screws but can be put together with only a screwdriver and a hammer.

But the plywood does not come pre-cut and do-it-yourself enthusiasts will need a CNC machine, laser cutter or table saw.

It has been designed to be low cost to construct and assembled in the comfort of your own cramped urban dwelling.

At just 2.8m by 2.5m, it is large enough for people to sit inside and enjoy some rest and relaxation.

It designers, Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum, believe the Growroom represents a future when people will look to grow more healthy food locally.

Both work for the Space10 design project in Copenhagen, Denmark, which is supported by Ikea .

In a recent blog post, they wrote: “The challenge is that traditional farming takes up a lot of space and space is a scarce resource in our urban environments.”

The Growroom has a small footprint but is designed to be extended vertically – perfect for those with limited outside space.

It has overlapping sections meaning plants get light at every level of the garden.

So far, it is unclear what the cost of the kit will be, but bargain hunters will be keeping their fingers crossed that it will be reasonably priced like the rest of the Ikea range.
