In this article are my top five reasons for going vegan, I hope I can open your minds to the idea of veganism. Whether you’re a meat eater or a vegetarian who needs that extra little push towards becoming a vegan, I urge you to read this article and make up your own mind:
1. Life Span:
Numerous studies have shown that the life expectancy of vegans and vegetarians is significantly higher than that of those who eat meat on a regular basis. One study found that on average vegetarian men live 9.5 and women 6.1 years longer than meat eaters. Think about it, vegan foods are high in fibre, complex carbohydrates, low in saturated fat, are cholesterol free and gives the body other essential nutrients that it needs. Whereas dairy products and some meats are high in calories, saturated fats and artery-clogging cholesterol – which I’m sure we can all agree are things we’d try hard to stay away from if we want to stay fit and healthy.
Of course being vegan alone is not the way to have a healthy life. Exercise, healthy relationships, not smoking or drinking too much, not taking harmful drugs are all huge factors too. But these things combined are crucial to maintaining a healthy body and living a long and happy life.
2. Word Hunger:
Do you know how much an acre of land can hold? Well it can produce 50,000 pounds of tomatoes, 40,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 pounds of carrots and only 250 pounds of beef. Despite that we are stripping down 60% of the world’s usable farmland for livestock. Where’s the sense in that? In regards to water, 23 gallons produce a pound of lettuce, 33 gallons for carrots, 4 gallons for apples and I’m sure you’ve guessed by now that it’s going to be much more to produce meats… You’re right! It takes 815 gallons to make a pound of chicken, 1,630 gallons for pork and a staggering 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef.
3. Animal Testing:
I think of any life to be sacred and precious regardless of the differences between species and creatures on Earth.
Answer me this, if we are so similar to these animals, in that we can test medicines on them and they can produce accurate enough results so that we think it is then safe to test these things on humans… If we are that similar (which is what it implies we are), then why is ok to hurt and kill them, but it is not ok to do the same to humans?! IT’S NOT.
Secondly, other humane, effective, cheaper, faster and more accurate means of testing these things have been developed by some modern thinking scientists, such as; in vitro technology, human – patient simulators, human based microdosing and some very sophisticated computer modelling.
My final point, although the list does goes on but I feel not much more needs to be said, is that my first point was based on the premise that the animals we use are able to effectively determine whether a drug is then safe to use on humans. However they are not, the Food and Drug Administration reports that 92/100 drugs that pass animal tests fail in human trials. So why are we still doing it?
Now I’m not implying that you will never catch a cold or get sick if you’re vegan. But there have been links found between various health problems and the hormones, toxins and antibiotics that are found in some animal based foods. It seems that far too often there is some strains of bacteria or some scare hitting the meat industry.
Numerous studies have found that vegetable based diets can halt and in some cases halt the growth of cancer! Isn’t that amazing! Some people are even saying that being vegan is the cure for cancer, I would not go as far as saying that at this stage but there’s pretty remarkable evidence to support that.
It’s Cruelty Free!
A sneaky sixth point and I know it’s an obvious one but it needs to be mentioned. By being vegan you are contributing in no way to the harming of animals, 100% cruelty free living!
