On November 4, 2016, Michael Bublé and his wife, Luisana Lopilato, made the devastating announcement that their son, Noah, was diagnosed with cancer. Noah, only three years old, suffered from a very rare type of liver cancer, affecting only 1 in 1 million children. Noah began a 4-month journey of treatment.
Pediatric Liver Cancer
While Michael and his family chose to keep Noah’s exact diagnosis private, it’s likely Pediatric Hepatoblastoma, the most common form of liver cancer affecting children. In most cases, treatment involves reducing the size of the tumor with chemotherapy, then surgery to remove the cancerous part of the liver. As you may know, the liver is one of the few human organs that can grow back. After the surgery, more chemo ensures that cancer can’t return.
Like many cancers, if doctors catch this type of pediatric liver cancer early, the survival rate is as high as 80%. However, if they do not detect it before it spreads to the entire liver or other parts of the body, the survival rate drops to 70% to 20%. Based on Noah’s status, it’s very likely that his cancer was detected early enough to be in the first category .
This celebrity case is just another example of how crucial it is to be vigilant and alert when it comes to kids’ health. According to Dr. Jennifer Willert of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, this form of pediatric cancer is exceedingly rare. However, here are a few of the possible signs and symptoms to watch out for.
- Under-development, or dysplasia, of the mid-face area, and slitlike indentations in the earlobes
- In advanced cases of the disease, victims may not be able to eat (anorexia)
- Club foot
- Kidney anomalies, such as dysplastic kidney or horseshoe kidney
- Cleft palate
- deformity or under-development of the earlobes, lips, soft palate, and nose
In early February 2017, Noah’s Aunt Daniela Lopilato, a nutritionist, shared the happy news that Noah is cancer free on Argentinian daytime TV. She also shared the news that Noah’s diagnosis was liver cancer back in November. It’s safe to say she’s been worried sick about the little guy. We’re very excited that this dark chapter in their lives has passed. Share this story if you can’t wait to see what’s in store for this truly adorable family!
