It’s an age old debate – should the man have to pay on the first date?

Some women believe chivalry dictates that men should always foot the bill, while some say it should be split, and then there are the few women who believe it’s their responsibility to pay.

And now Matthew Hussey, an international dating expert and best-selling author, has had his say on the matter.

But be warned: it’s somewhat controversial.

In a video taken at a dating forum run by Hussey and recently posted to his Facebook page, he addresses what is one of the biggest questions in a potential relationship after it was raised by a member of the crowd.

‘When you’re on a date, who should pay?’ Hussey questions the room full of women.

A resounding chorus sings out with just one word – ‘Man!’

A bemused Hussey laughs, before putting the issue into context.

‘But you’re supposed to have sex with him whenever he says?’ Hussey asks.

Again the crowd of women ring out in unison with a resounding, ‘no’, leading the dating expert to ask where this double standard comes from?

‘You can moan at it all you want, but the moment you say to a guy “You have to pay for my time”, you’re saying this relationship isn’t equal,’ Hussey says.

‘Here’s my view – If you go on a date with a guy and you don’t offer to pay your share, you weren’t taught right.

‘But if you go on a date and he doesn’t pay, he wasn’t taught right!’
