Guy Accidentally Leaves His Front Door Open, Gets ‘Chosen’ By A Stray Dog Who Walked In At Night

Getting a pet is a lifelong commitment and should be given serious consideration before rushing off to the local shelter. Most shelters give adoptees the opportunity to get to know the animal they adopt to ensure it’s a good fit for the animal and the family, sometimes though, fate takes matters in hand with wonderful results, as in the case of the stray dog and Jack Jokinen from Philadelphia.

Jack shared the bizarre incident on his Twitter account: Early on a Saturday morning earlier this month, Jake’s wife woke him with the news that there was a strange dog in the house.  “When we found Suzy it was a combination of scared and confused. We had no idea how she got here and worried someone was in our house. She was scared and shaking from being wet and cold,” Jack said.

He checked the doors and windows and they were all secured, very strange indeed. Good thing they had security cameras which, when Jack checked the footage, solved the mystery.

Turns out that Jack did not close the front door properly when he came in and it stayed open during the night. The footage shows a stray, very thin dog limping down the street. The dog noticed the open door and took the opportunity to get out of the cold and into the warm house. Shortly after, a kind stranger walked by, saw the open door and closed it.

When Jack saw the dog, he realized she needed urgent help and took her to the vet. The vet confirmed she had no microchip, was about eight years old and severely malnourished and injured. “Suzy has a heart murmur, hook worn, infected paws, pad damage and atrophy in one of the legs from it being so damaged. She needs a bunch of dental work but is very underweight so we need to get her weight up and have some tests to make sure she can be put under for procedures.”

Instead of surrendering her to the shelter, he took her home and named her Suzy where she now lives with the family and their other dog, George. “We decided to adopt her because she had no owner, and our first dog George has brought us so much joy, we could imagine just putting her in the system,” he said.

“She has been great with our family, including our baby. She is very sweet and just wants to be loved. Suzy is on the mend and getting better every day. Her body is filling out and she is on antibiotics to treat some of her problems. She’s got a long road ahead but is on the way,” Jack confirmed.

Susy’s story went viral with many people amazed by the fortunate turn of events which lead to Suzy’s life not only being saved but her also finding a forever home.

Thus far vet bill stood at $1000, prompting Jack to ask for donations and of course, people opened their hearts and wallet:  “The twitter thread took a life of its own. I never expected it to turn into this but Suzy is now the internets dog. People have donated about $18k towards Suzy’s medical bills. We hope they aren’t that high and we can take the remaining funds to donate to a worthwhile cause.”
