Enlightened Artist Secludes Himself And Creates A Stunning Sanctuary Of Sacred Sculptures

TW PoR09 600

There was an artist by the name of William Ricketts  (1898–1993) who lived for much of his life among the Pitjantjatjara and Arrernte people of central Australia.  The impact these native people had on him was very powerful. Over time he became spiritually aware and this level of enlightenment led him to develop a clear sense of purpose for the remainder of his life.

He decided to move to a secluded region of Mount Dandenong deep in Australia to cultivate and channel his feelings in a creative way.

He spent the rest of his life creating a huge memorial sanctuary for the purpose of preserving the ancestral ways of life that he had learnt from his native friends. It was to act as a message to the posterity, a declaration of peace and enlightenment.

These memorials are now known as The William Ricketts Sanctuary and are home to 92 memorial statues, all of which stand to eternally represent the lives of those who choose not to deviate from tradition, maintaining their harmonious existence with the surroundings that bestowed them with life.

Here are a selection of some of his stunning creations. Enjoy.
