Dogs are interactive, social creatures by nature and will definitely let you know if they’re hungry, need to go outside or need an oh-so-good tummy rub.

They are so in tune, that they even sense our emotions, sometimes way before we can even process what we’re feeling ourselves.

Something else which rather fascinates me id a dog’s ability to identify ‘bad people’.

Being untrustworthy will also lead to your dog refraining from listening to commands.

Based on a study which was published in the Animal Cognition journal, experiments were conducted.

In round 1, a person pointed out a container which held dog food. The dog walked over to see the food.

In round 2, he did the same thing, but the container was empty. The dog walked over ad found the container to be empty.

In the final round, round 3, the person pointed to the bowl again, but the dog ignored him. This proved the dog deeming the person unreliable based on them deceiving them in round 2.

On the plus side, a dog will never hold it against you if someone else is unreliable. In fact, when a second person followed out round 1 again, the dog trusted them and went up to the bowl again, proving that it had not deemed the person unreliable, just because of the previous tester.

“Dogs have more sophisticated social intelligence than we thought. This social intelligence evolved selectively in their long life history with humans.” —Akiko Takaoka of Kyoto University in Japan

Another study led to further discovery where dogs refused to accept food from people who were rude to their owners.

It was further found that dogs avoided people who were associated with poor treatment towards their owners which clearly points out how dogs can in fact read social behavior in humans and actually understand it.

There are of course certain breeds which seem more in tuned than others and based on findings by Psychologist Stanley Coren, a ranking system was put in place to point out the top 10 – which may I warn, might surprise you!

The top 10 smartest breeds — in order of intelligence — according to Dr. Coren are:

  1. Border Collie
  2. Poodle
  3. German Shepherd
  4. Golden Retriever
  5. Doberman Pinscher
  6. Shetland Sheepdog
  7. Labrador Retriever
  8. Papillon
  9. Rottweiler
  10. Australian Cattle Dog
