Common household items are one of the largest contributors to environmental waste. Products like cotton swabs, laundry detergent packaging, and toothpaste are used on a daily to weekly basis adding to landfills worldwide. However, alternative brands are continuing to pop up with sustainable ingredients and containers. Larger companies are taking note by making necessary changes to stay ahead. Colgate releases vegan fluoride-free toothpaste in Europe to keep up with eco-friendly competitors. The power is truly in the consumer’s hand. To see bigger brands follow-through is just another result of exercising conscious practices when spending money.

Sustainable Packaging

Colgate’s Smile for Good brand makes their toothpaste tubes from high-density polyethylene, a diverse and durable recyclable material. For example, some of the recyclable use components include patio furniture, trash cans, compost bins, playground equipment, and more.

Up to 20 billion toothpaste tubes are made each year, according to Colgate and The Association of Plastic Recyclers. As an industry leader, Colgate announced their plans on making all of their toothpaste tubes recyclable by 2025

Vegan Ingredients

Correct. Not all toothpaste brands are vegan. Most contain glycerin which is a byproduct of animal fat.

According to Colgate, they are using plant-sourced glycerin as an ethical substitute. In an attempt to remain transparent, the company is also listing all ingredients with their purpose on labeling. No more wondering what or why weirdly pronounced words are listed on the packaging. For example, glycerin is used to prevent toothpaste from drying out while silica cleans and polishes. This line of toothpaste is also fluoride-free. This is a major point for maintaining a decalcified pineal gland.

In a recent announcement, The Vegan Society shared, “Colgate has just launched TWO vegan toothpastes so you can keep your teeth sparkling with a clear conscience.”

Colgate’s Smile for Good is taking monumental steps. At $6.50 per tube, it will be up to the consumer to decide whether they will invest in this product or not. A company in Canada is taking things a step further by looking into toothpaste tablets. This eliminates the need for any packaging whatsoever.
