Coca-Cola Named Worst Plastic Polluter in the World for Second Year in a Row

cover

For the second year in a row, a global audit of plastic waste released by the Break Free From Plastic NGO  has found Coca-Cola to be the worlds top polluter. As per the report, Coca-Cola contributes to more plastic waste than the next 3 runners up…combined.

The audit was conducted by over 70,000 volunteers from 51 countries. The picked up plastic bags, bottles and other trash in waterways, the cities and along beaches.

11,732 plastics were recorded in 37 countries on four continents, which is about 2.5% of the total plastic waste that the audit reported on. Africa and Europe came out tops for most plastic from Coca-Cola out of all it’s plastic waste.

Runners up for “winner” of the most plastic pollution were Nestle and PepsiCo, while other big brands who were high up on the list included Mars, Procter & Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive, Phillip Morris International, and Perfetti Van Mille.

Break Free From Plastics said in a statement about the companies who ranked on top: “offered mostly false solutions to the plastics crisis, underscoring how important it is for voices from beyond the consumer goods sector to demand accountability and call for an end to single-use plastics.”

The global coordinator for the group, Von Hernandez also said:

“This report provides more evidence that corporations urgently need to do more to address the plastic pollution crisis they’ve created.

Their continued reliance on single-use plastic packaging translates to pumping more throwaway plastic into the environment.

Recycling is not going to solve this problem.

Break Free From Plastic’s nearly 1,800 member organizations are calling on corporations to urgently reduce their production of single-use plastic and find innovative solutions focused on alternative delivery systems that do not create pollution.”

Last year, Coca-Cola ‘vowed’ to collect and recycle the equivalent of what it sells world wide, which is around 3.3 million tons of plastic packaging PER YEAR. That equates to 200,000 bottles EVERY SINGLE MINUTE. You can see the figures released to The Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

The report said:

“We cannot recycle our way out of the plastic problem, and companies that are claiming it is the solution are simply avoiding making real change.”
