The efforts of essential workers and those on the front line are not being ignored. On Wednesday, May 6, 2020, the Southampton General Hospital received an unexpected gift from the elusive artist, Banksy.
The piece shows a young child seated next to a waste bin filled with classic superhero characters. In his hand, he gazes up at a nurse wearing a facemask and cape with her arm out on a mission.
In his note, Banksy includes, “Thanks for all you’re doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white.”
“Here at Southampton, our hospital family has been directly impacted with the tragic loss of much loved and respected members of staff and friends,” said Paula Head, CEO of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
“The fact that Banksy has chosen us to recognize the outstanding contribution everyone in and with the NHS is making, in unprecedented times, is a huge honor.”
“It will no doubt also be a massive boost to morale for everyone who works and is cared for at our hospital,” she continues.
The painting is intended to go for auction this fall. Proceeds will go to NHS charities.
This iconic image is named “Game Changer.” With a simple, yet powerful title, Banksy captures the voice of millions in a thoughtful gift. As we continue to face a global biological villain, appreciation and admiration are naturally redirected to those who save lives on a daily basis.
