The terrifying ‘Big Brother is watching you’ from Orwell’s book, 1984, is becoming a reality with the rapid advances in technology tracking our every move on the internet, facial recognition algorithms and surveillance in public places.

Polish designer Ewa Nowak has created a solution with her minimalist metal mask, Incognito. The elegant brass mask is designed to block recognizable facial features from cameras and its supporting software.

Incognito’s frame fits over the ears like spectacle frames with three shapes to mask features. The elongated polygon sits between the eyebrows and spans the height of the forehead and a disc covers each cheekbone. The shapes are connected by wire and secured to the frame, creating a suitably futuristic look.

When worn, Incognito really works, Nowak writes: “This project was preceded by a long-term study on the shape, size, and location of mask elements so that it actually fulfills its task. When testing solutions, I used the DeepFace algorithm, which is used by Facebook. The polished pieces on the face deflect the software used to track you while in public as well as through social media.’’
