I am a bit a self confessed movie-buff and the other night whilst I up late working on Educate Inspire Change I came across the move Captain Fantastic and I have to say it is without doubt one of the best movies I have seen in a good few years.

I don’t see it appealing to everyone however. That is what makes it such a great film because no one will leave the screening ambivalent. The more open-minded audience will be vastly in the Fantastic camp, but I can see this film is not going to go down well everywhere with everyone. If it did, it would be some fluff piece and not the classic it is destined to be.

Here is  brief description of what the movie is about : In the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent.

In one of the scenes the father played by Viggo Mortensen is arguing with sister in-law about how he raises his children. Without giving too much away I will share the video for you below:

I myself have 3 young boys and am seriously considering either a combination of normal schooling with nature schooling or just home schooling with nature schooling and other activities. I think that is one of the reasons this movie really resonated with me.

The movie is a great examination of extremism verses conformity; it does a very fair job of weighing the pros and cons of each. It’s also an excellent character study, that’s filled with involving performances; especially from Viggo, but the child actors are all good as well. It’s equally funny, heart breaking and thought provoking. It’s definitely a film that will leave a lasting impression on me, and I wouldn’t mind revisiting it, at some point in the future.

I hope you enjoy the movie as much as I did!
