On Thursday, October 24, at 4:20pm, Sen. Bernie Sanders released his expansive plan to, as president, legalize marijuana and ensure the benefits of legalization will be felt across all communities, especially those most affected by the war on drugs.
“We will legalize marijuana and vacate and expunge past marijuana convictions,” the Vermont senator and 2020 presidential candidate said in a statement announcing the policy.
Sanders posted the plan on twitter saying, “Too many lives were ruined due to the disastrous criminalization of marijuana”.
The proposal would legalize marijuana in the first 100 days of a Sanders administration, vacate and expunge all past marijuana convictions, and “ensure that revenue from legal marijuana is reinvested in communities hit hardest by the War on Drugs, especially African-American and other communities of color.”
Too many lives were ruined due to the disastrous criminalization of marijuana. Today I am releasing my plan to:
✅ Legalize marijuana with executive action
✅ Expunge past marijuana convictions
✅ Invest in communities most affected by the War on Drugs https://t.co/0xQSHn6F3U

An important part of the plan includes the prevention of marijuana being turned into a business like the tobacco industry by structuring it like a non-profit, prohibiting targeting youth through advertising, and preventing “consolidation and profiteering.”
- Legalize marijuana in the first 100 days with executive action
- Vacate and expunge all past marijuana-related convictions
- Ensure that revenue from legal marijuana is reinvested in communities hit hardest by the War on Drugs
- Ensure legalized marijuana does not turn into big tobacco
So far over 51,000 twitter users liked the Senator’s tweet:
A number of users tweeted “Nice,” in response, and a “Blaze it,” from Canadian journalist Rob Rousseau.
