Face it – it’s a huge feat growing such an impressive beard. From the thickness to the length, guys just cannot stop obsessing over the perfect beard.
Well, you might wanna shave off that precious fuzz after hearing this – that’s right, the average beard contains more germs than a dog carries in it’s fur. Men, your chin hair could actually be harmful to your health, harboring harmful bacteria, whereas dogs have gotten away with generally lower microbe counts.
18 men had their beards swabbed, with 30 dog’s offering swab samples from their necks, across a broad range of breeds. The results were analyzed and compared and think about it – there were 12 ore dogs than men to start with.
Professor Andreas Gutzeit, of Switzerland’s Hirslanden Clinic has published his findings: “The researchers found a significantly higher bacterial load in specimens taken from the men’s beards compared with the dogs’ fur.
“On the basis of these findings, dogs can be considered as clean compared with bearded men.”
The study grossly found that all 18 men, varying in age between 18 and 76 all displayed awfully high microbe counts, compared with only 23 of the 30 dogs having higher than acceptable levels, making dogs ‘technically’ cleaner.
Yes, there are less men involved, but figures don’t lie – the percentages stand out and cannot be ignored.
7 of the men had microbes that actually posed a risk to human health.
Keith Flett, founder of the Beard Liberation Front (yes, that is such a thing), cast doubt on the report telling the MailOnline: “‘I think it’s possible to find all sorts of unpleasant things if you took swabs from people’s hair and hands and then tested them.”
“I don’t believe that beards in themselves are unhygienic,” he wouldn’t really considering his title…
Mr Flett continued: “There seems to be a constant stream of negative stories about beards that suggest it’s more about pogonophobia than anything else.”
Pogonophobia s i turns out is the condition where one severely dislikes beards, who would have thought?
So we’re not saying men with beards are gross, but we are saying you should watch out for that glorious grow and keep them clean gents!
