The definition by which a successful life is made varies from individual to individual. It also may not be on everyone’s to do list to chain themselves to a 20-year mortgage. As people continue to step into their power and live to their own design, alternative living options are growing in popularity. The rise of social media has been a great tool in making these approaches more realistic to achieve. After all, the only thing that holds us back is the notion of what it is supposed to look like.

1.  Van

The #vanlife way of living has gained traction over the last couple of years. Social media shows a lot of the luxurious parts behind it which can leave viewers with an unrealistic expectation. However, just as with any lifestyle, there are highs and lows. A house on wheels that gets you from point A to point B is great for the adventurous spirit who wants to save money while seeing the world.

2. Earthship

These off-grid homes never looked so luxurious. Made entirely of recycled materials (used tires, glass bottles, etc.…), Earthships are an alternative living option that provide self-sustained gardens and require no utility bills. Don’t worry. If you really want to, you can still connect to wi-fi.

3. Housing Co-Ops

This is a great way to create and establish community while getting the most for your buck. Get your friends together, buy a good amount of land, build your dream homes, and let the good times roll. Split the price of everything from construction to amenities and create the space of your dreams. Maybe that means creating a non-profit to serve the community at large or starting a garden to grow your own food.

4. Tiny House

Great things come in small packages. These homes are a prime example of what it means to live big in a simple way. Most commonly seen against forest backdrops, this alternative option narrows in the things that matter most. Without a hefty mortgage to pay, tiny house dwellers can devote attention to spending more time in nature, exploring, and connecting with others.

5. Classic Nomadic

The classic nomadic lifestyle ranges from couch surfing, house-sitting, backpacking, and renting out airbnbs. There are many sites to find accommodations to sooth the wandering soul and nourish the adventurous spirit.

6. Teach Abroad and Live for Free

If you have a skill or know a language that’s in demand, pack your bag, teach abroad, and live for free. Whether it is something you do for one year or five, this is an economical way to see different parts of the world and get paid for it. The reward of giving back to the global community is another benefit that naturally comes with the gig.

7. Boat

While boat life might not be as popular or mainstream as van life, setting sail and living on the sea is an alternative lifestyle option meant for those who crave endless horizons. Not into sailing? You can find an old boat for an affordable price and convert into a home that sits on land. Decorate it just as you wish and bring the sea to you with nautical interiors.

8. Free Spirit Spheres

This one is for all the fairies and woodland admirers. If tree houses were your favorite place to play growing up, these free spirit spheres are a fun alternative to keep the kid at heart alive. These homes are nestled among treetops and blend futuristic spaceship vibes within nature’s embrace. Suitable for a single person or couple, free spirit spheres bridge the micro and macro aspects of the forest, a single organism made up of many different parts.

The options are endless and range from homes made of shipping containers to underground domes. Life on the road or in a tree may not be the mainstream way of life for many. However, it can be the most rewarding and enriching experiences along the journey.
