This 11 year old just took her lemonade stand to a whole new level.

You may have seen this gem on Shark Tank where she was backed with $60,000 for her BeeSweet lemonade business, but for those of you who haven’t, let me introduce you to Mikaila Ulmer, a very young social entrepreneur who is making a huge difference.

It all started when Mikaila’s  parents encouraged her to create a product for the Acton Children’s Business Fair. While she was thinking, she got stung by a bee twice and then her great grandmother sent a family cookbook with her special Flaxseed Lemonade recipe inside. From there, Mikaila created “BeeSweet Lemonade.” Coincidence? I think not. The universe always provides us with the answers and little Mikaila listened.

“I didn’t enjoy the bee stings at all. They scared me. But then something strange happened. I became fascinated with bees. I learned all about what they do for me and our ecosystem. So then I thought, ‘What if I make something that helps honeybees and uses my Great-Granny Helen’s recipe?’ That’s how BeeSweet Lemonade was born. It comes from my Great-Granny Helen’s flaxseed recipe and my new love for bees. So that’s why we sweeten it with local honey. And today my little idea continues to grow.”-Mikaila Ulmer

Mikaila hopes to raise awareness to save the honey bees and she currently donates a portion of her profits to organizations that help them. So far, she’s met the president and landed her lemonade in 55 Whole Foods, so I’d say she is definitely getting the buzz out on the importance of bees.

“Last year, beekeepers lost 40 percent of all their hives. Bees are dying. And in the words of Albert Einstein,”If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.”-Mikaila Ulmer

Her advice for others who would also like to become a social entrepreneur:

-Create a business that you have a true passion for-the more passion, the more fun you’ll have while doing it.

-You can still be sweet and profitable.

Thank you Mikaila for making an enormous difference for our planet and for reminding us to “bee sweet!”
