The Eric Garner case exposed a side of America that many would prefer not to look at.

If the American people were a family, it would be one of those broken, dysfunctional families which desperately need an intervention, but which prefers not to talk about the problem until violence breaks out, or until Jerry Springer puts a mic in their face. Unfortunately this isn’t just a metaphor.

That America has a problem with race is obvious, but the nature of that problem is a serious point of contention. The aftermath of the Mike Brown shooting and the Eric Garner chokehold illustrate this vividly.
